A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
