The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
